If you are looking for a main stream horror franchise that delivers quality film after another, then you can't go wrong with The Conjuring Universe and all the films that fall under it's umbrella. Just earlier this year we got La Llorona which is loosely attached and now with Annabelle Comes Home, we can only looked forward to Conjuring Ch 3 which will no doubt be another solid movie.
This is the third Annabelle "stand alone" picture and while Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson do return to reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film really highlights Judy Warren played by Mckenna Grace. The premise is while dealing with how her classmates view her parents, Judy finds friendship in her baby sitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and the Warrens leave Judy in her care overnight. Soon May Ellen's friend Daniela visits the Warren home at first to give Judy a early birthday gift, but when then see she has ulterior motives.
Daniela is really hoping that by visiting the Warren's room that one is really never supposed to go into (where Annabelle is kept) she can talk to her departed father one last time. In doing so she not only let's the demon possessing Annabelle out, she lets most of the spirits Ed and Lorraine have confined out and into the the property. What then follows is scary sequence after scary sequence of which we have come to expect from this franchise.
We are exposed to what might be the next character to get it's own film in "The Ferryman" who while isn't anywhere close to as crucial to the plot as The Nun was, is till pretty creepy looking and provides sequence that made me jump a couple times. The story in itself didn't have me on the edge of my seat like Conjuring Ch 1 and 2 have. Some reviews have called this film "The scariest of the Conjuring Universe" and I can't agree as that title still goes to Ch2 in my opinion.
What this movie does do rather well is combine a lot of the elements that it's predicessors did well and delivers a good film as a result. I didn't find this film as scary as Annabelle: Origins either, but don't take that as a negative as it's like comparing your two favorite desserts: both are very
good, one just happens to be better than the other. What I will say for this film is I didn't miss the Warrens in this story as I though the trio of actresses did an excellent job carrying this film without them. I really do believe we are seeing something special develop with these films and I sincerely look forward to watching what they have in store for us next.
