Fans (for the most part) have not been very pleased with most of the films that have come out of DC Studios. Wonder Woman was by far the bright light in a series of confusing decisions each time another DC character appeared on the silver screen. That is why when the first trailer for Bright Burn dropped, my jaw did as well. No, this isn't officially attached to DC, but it did have James Gunn (Director of Guardians of the Galaxy 1/2) attached as a producer.
Then there's the concept. What if Superman didn't decide to save humanity but instead destroyed it. The story is pretty much the same as Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman) are a couple struggling to have a child, and like a miracle a space ship crashes in their Kansas backyard. Inside the ship is a seemingly perfect baby boy.
Flash forward twelve years and now Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) is starting to get the feeling that maybe there is more to his adaption than his parents have informed him. Despite his parent's efforts Brandon finds out that he isn't from Earth and the message coming from the ship is saying "Take The Planet" and Brandon is more that happy to oblige.
The film really showcases the relationship between Brandon and Tori as his mom really defends him till the bitter end just as Martha would for Clark Kent and this is Elizabeth Bank's best performance in recent memory. The horror aspect as Brandon really does go dark is nicely done with kills that are so brutal I was really shocked. The only complaint that I had was that it takes awhile for Brandon to figure out who he really is and to start wrecking shop. However, the other side of the coin would be to say that time is needed to show just how hard it is for everyone surrounding Brandon how much they did love him. This movie was a lot of fun to watch and as a horror fan and a comic book fanatic I don't know what more we could have asked for.
