One of the newest shows out on Netflix is a ten episode first season centered around a young girl Sasha (Sivan Alyra Rose) who has a heart attack at a very unfortunate time as she is about to loose her virginity to her high school boyfriend. Fortunately for Sasha her uncle Frank played by Mar LaVoi signs a waiver for a heart transplant that Sasha needs. The only catch is that the heart my not be exactly what Frank or Sasha for that matter had been expecting.
The donor is a young teen named Becky who isn't exactly ready to pass on to whatever awaits us on the other side. Becky's parents played by Umma Thurman and Tony Goldwyn take liking to Sasha offering her Becky's private school scholarship and even her old Prius much to Frank's chagrin. For the first half of the season the show has a very creepy feel as Becky is slowly taking over Sasha's body and they way that is is depicted cinematically is well done. Umma Thurman's performance of a grieving mother on top of being pretty creepy can't be understated as she really shines.
The second half of the season deals more with Sasha convincing her best friend Yvonne (Kyanna Simone Simpson) and Becky's brother Elliot ( Nicholas Galitzine) that not only something crazy is going on, but getting them to help her. The show deals with Native American traditions and dark magic which is conveyed well however the show's conclusion feels really rushed to me.
The setup for the second season (assuming there will be one) detracted from the final episode quite a bit ****Spoilers- We get a time jump and Becky's father Ben who at this point is a miss-informed villain die (Presumingly) off screen. We see Sasha start to in-brace the Dark spirit that is possessing her (Becky had tried to warn her about this) and kill about 20 men. That ending was very lack luster, however the bulk of this show was fun watch and I do recommend it.
Final Score 8/10
